Tunisia, which is represented by Minister of the Environment Leila Chikhaoui Mahdaoui, is participating in the first Africa Climate Summit (ACS), held from September 4 to 6, in Nairobi, Kenya, at a time marked by increasing calls to consolidate the capacity of African countries to address the risks of the climate change. Taking the floor at a high-level ministerial meeting on the implementation of priority policies of adaptation to climate change in Africa, the minister said that African countries are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. «Tunisia is one of the African countries facing an increase in temperatures of around 1.5 degrees since the beginning of the 20th century,» Mahdaoui pointed out. The summit seeks to combine efforts of all stakeholders, including decision-makers, the private sector and civil society organisations so as to address the impacts of climate change in Africa as well as lay the foundations for a more resilient and inclusive development system which would benefit all African countries. The Summit also focuses on improving climate change in 4 key areas: promoting clean energy and industry, resilient infrastructure, sustainable transport and urban development, sustainable use of land and seas and water and food security, preserving health as well as bolstering economic development, investment promotion and mobilising innovative climate finance. This first Africa Summit is attended by over 25,000 participants representing all African countries, non-governmental organisations, international, regional and national organisations as well as senior officials from financial and support bodies to investment at the international and regional levels.
