Former President and Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, says his Running Mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, will play the role of a co-driver in his government. 'We have the men and the women to be able to turn things around, and Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang is going to be my co-driver. She is not going to be my driver's mate,' he said. Mr Mahama, who made the statement amid loud applause at a rally at Sandema in the Builsa North Constituency, said, 'While I handle Defence, Interior, Finance and those other Ministries, she will be handling Education, Health, Gender Protection, and we will work together.' The Flag bearer prior to the rally, addressed durbars of Chiefs and people, rallies at Yagaba- Kubore in the North East Region, and undertook similar activities at Fumbisi in the Builsa South Constituency of the Upper East Region as part of his four-day tour of the Region and parts of the North East Region. Mr Mahama said the selection of Professo r Agyemang as Running Mate, gave hope to females and that it was an encouragement to them to rise to the highest position of the land. The Flag bearer emphasized that 'We are not making her Vice President because she is a woman. We are making her Vice President because she is qualified. 'She was the first Vice-Chancellor of a Public University; she was my Minister of Education. At her time, all children in basic schools had textbooks free of charge from government. 'At her time, we removed more than 2000 schools under trees. She started the E-Block schools. This is a capable woman. She is capable of being Vice President and she will make the women of Ghana proud,' Former President Mahama said. He said given the nod as President, the country would be re-set, and its economic fortunes turned around for good, adding that 'I am not going to do it alone. For the first time in the history of Ghana, a capable and qualified Ghanaian woman is going to be elected as the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana'. He said the NDC was about infrastructure, and that was the reason the Party was referred to as the 'Nation Builder' and indicated that anytime the NDC was in government, there was provision of electricity, water, schools, hospitals and roads. The Flag bearer said if the Party took over the administration of the country in 2025, it would continue with its infrastructural development, including extension of electricity to communities, construction work on the Chuchuliga-Wiesi-Sandema road, among other projects. He said while his government worked to finish abandoned projects, it would also concentrate on creation of jobs for the teeming unemployed youth through the 24-Hour Economy policy. 'With the 24-Hour Economy, we are going to encourage businesses to lengthen their working hours so that they can take on additional employees,' he said. Source: Ghana News Agency
