Ghana's Parliament, under the distinguished leadership of Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is scheduled to host the Second General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) in Accra. A statement issued by the Media Department of Parliament, copied to the Ghana News Agency said the Meeting would commence from Friday, 25th October, to Sunday, 27th October. CoSPAL was established in 2020 as a platform to facilitate increased deliberation, collaboration, and cooperation between Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments and National Assemblies across Africa to address common challenges, devise joint strategies, and mobilise collective action to advance Africa's development. The first General Assembly was held in May 2022, in Abuja, under the leadership of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, where the foundation was laid for the convergence of heads of African legislatures on critical issues relating to post-COVID eco nomic recovery and democratic development. The statement said the Second General Assembly would bring together about 120 participants including 15 Speakers and Presidents of National Legislatures, 30 Deputy Speakers and Presidents, Clerks and Secretary Generals and supporting staffs of Parliaments and Assemble Nationales across Africa. It said the scheduled Conference, was purposed to, under the leadership of the Speaker of Parliament and current President of CoSPAL, build on the foundation of the first General Assembly to foster unity and collaborative governance among African legislatures. It noted that the assembly represented a decisive step towards enhancing legislative effectiveness and fostering regional solidarity in addressing shared challenges across Africa. The statement indicated that in addition to organising and directing the Conference, the Ghanaian Parliament would utilise the Second General Assembly of CoSPAL to showcase to their continental colleagues, Ghana's brand of democracy and prov erbial hospitality.
