Obuasi: About 95 percent of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Obuasi municipal area have sources of livelihood due to the impact of the Disability Fund, Mr. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Municipal Chief Executive, has stated. Three percent of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF), released quarterly to the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), is allocated for the welfare of PWDs. According to Ghana News Agency, speaking at a short ceremony to present items to some PWDs in Obuasi, the MCE highlighted that the Fund has supported many PWDs in the municipality who previously struggled to find means of livelihood, often resorting to begging on roadsides. In total, 21 individuals received various items such as knitting machines, fufu pounding machines, and industrial sewing machines, as well as educational and medical support. To ensure the items are used for their intended purposes, all items have been embossed to prevent beneficiaries from selling them. The Fund, according to Mr. Adansi -Bonah, has significantly impacted the lives of PWDs, enabling them to engage in economic ventures and establish their own businesses. Mr. Adansi-Bonah emphasized that the idea behind the Fund was to provide social protection for PWDs, urging beneficiaries to utilize the support prudently to achieve self-reliance. Mr. Karim Iddrisu, President of the Obuasi chapter of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD), expressed gratitude to the government for this intervention. He also appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement measures that would facilitate easier voting access for persons with disabilities in the upcoming elections. He noted that many members had faced challenges such as long queues, which discouraged participation in the democratic process. "We as PWDs always believe in democracy since it is the only way we can be part of governance processes and be heard too. So we are appealing to the EC to make it easier for our members to participate in the process," he said.
