Accra: The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has made a public appeal to the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOSGAG) to reconsider its decision to initiate a nationwide strike. The Commission has advised CLOSGAG to engage in further negotiations to address their concerns in a timely manner. According to Ghana News Agency, the FWSC's appeal was communicated through a statement signed by Mrs. Emelia Ennin, Head of Public Affairs at FWSC, and distributed to relevant parties. The statement was issued in response to a press release from CLOSGAG on November 4, 2024, announcing their intention to strike starting Thursday, November 7, 2024. CLOSGAG's demands include a new salary structure and revised conditions of service, which had been submitted to the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor for consideration and approval. The statement highlighted that a communique from July 12, 2024, indicated that both parties had shown a commitment to resolving key issues related to the salar y structure for Civil Service and Local Government Service staff. The government has been considering alternative methods to address CLOSGAG's demands, ensuring no harm to the existing pay policy. The government is also mindful of a High Court ruling from April 22, 2011, which prevents CLOSGAG from withdrawing from the Single Spine Pay Policy. The statement also addressed CLOSGAG's previous actions, including ignoring the authority of Mr. Benjamin Arthur, the Chief Executive of FWSC, and walking out of meetings. These actions were described as undermining the state institution responsible for managing the government's pay policy. The FWSC emphasized that despite these challenges, the government remains open to engaging with CLOSGAG to find a lasting solution to their demands, without compromising the Single Spine Pay Policy's principles.
