Payment of foreign travel tax is now possible through the purchase of electronic tax stamps via a digital platform to be set up by the Ministry of Finance. According to the Finance Minister's decision of October 16, 2023, published in the Journal Gazette of the Tunisian Republic (French: JORT) on October 20, the electronic tax stamps will be checked when travellers leave the country by air or sea by the border and foreign police services, thanks to a link between the computer systems of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Finance. Each electronic travel stamp has a unique reference in the form of a series of 16 numbers received by SMS or e-mail. It can also take the form of a visible electronic code on an acknowledgement of receipt sent by e-mail. The electronic travel stamp contains information on the date of purchase, the passport number and country of the person concerned, the amount of tax due and the expiry date, which is set at 6 months from the date of purchase. After one month from the date of purchase and before the expiry of the 6-month validity period, it is possible to request a refund of the amount of tax due for travel abroad for unused electronic travel stamps. As a reminder, Finance Supplementary Law No. 84-2 of 21 March 1984 introduced a tax on foreign travel payable by all residents of Tunisia, regardless of nationality, with effect from March 29, 1984.
