Kete-Krachi: Mr. Mashud Omar Mohammed, the Assistant Oti Regional Planning Manager of the National Road Safety Authority, has highlighted the significant role illegal speed ramps play in causing accidents on specific road networks in the region. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mohammed particularly pointed out the road stretch through Dodokope in the Krachi Nchumuru district leading to Kete-Krachi in the Krachi West Municipality as a critical area where these illegal constructions have resulted in numerous accidents. Mr. Mohammed explained that residents along this route have constructed unauthorized speed calming devices, which have become potential causes of accidents, especially affecting new drivers and motorists. He attributed the erection of these ramps by residents to the over-speeding tendencies of drivers and motorcyclists in the area. The Assistant Manager recounted incidents where road crashes claimed lives, notably the tragic event last year where five individuals lost their lives instantly around the communities of Ankase and Mata Malam. Furthermore, Mr. Mohammed shared that the National Road Safety Authority is developing strategies to assist schools along these roads, ensuring students can cross safely and reduce incidents of road knockdowns and crashes. He emphasized the need for community engagement and education on the detrimental effects of illegal speed ramps, assuring that standard speed ramps would be installed if deemed necessary. He urged residents and road users to refrain from constructing these illegal structures to minimize accident occurrences. In efforts to enhance road safety within the Krachi West Municipality, Mr. Mohammed announced the inauguration of a nine-member committee on 27 October 2024. The committee, composed of representatives from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, transport unions, and other relevant bodies, is tasked with reducing accidents in the area. Chaired by the Municipal Chief Executive, the committee aims to foster collective respo nsibility in ensuring road safety. Mr. Mohammed charged the committee to intensify their efforts to secure safer roads for all.
