Krowor MCE Urges Farmers to Adopt Climate-Resilient Agriculture Practices.

Krowor: Mr. Joshua Bortey, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Krowor Municipal Assembly (KroMA), has called on farmers to adopt climate-smart farming practices to ensure sustainable food production. This appeal was made during the municipality's 40th Farmers Day Celebration, themed 'Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,' where his speech was delivered by Ms. Jemima Akpedo Kalikratis, the Coordinating Director for the assembly. According to Ghana News Agency, the event featured free health screenings and the presentation of various items, such as fridges, water pumps, knapsack sprayers, and cutlasses, as prizes to the winners. The overall best farmer was awarded a tricycle along with other items. During the celebration, Mr. Bortey emphasized the need for collaboration among the government, farmers, research institutions, funding agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector to promote climate-resilient agriculture for food sustenance and security. Mr. Bo rtey outlined several practices needed for building climate-adaptive farming, urging farmers to cultivate climate-resilient crops and employ water management techniques such as precision irrigation, drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater recharge. He also highlighted the importance of greenhouse farming, managing feed through diet composition modifications, and utilizing local weather information for location-specific technologies. Additionally, he emphasized creating artificial ecosystems for livestock rearing and fish farming. The MCE acknowledged the government's role in fostering an enabling environment for agriculture through incentives and strategic policy interventions, which benefit farmers and fishers feeding Ghana's population and supporting industries. He noted the enhancement of 270 farms with the distribution of fertilizers and maize seeds under the government's planting for food and jobs programme. Furthermore, mango and coconut seedlings were distributed, and unemployed youth w ere supported in fish farming initiatives. Moreover, over 1,800 farmers and processors received training in climate-smart agriculture practices under the modernisation of agriculture programme. The assembly also established the Nungua Landing Beach Committee to ensure fishermen are regularly supplied with premix fuel while adhering to fishing laws. Ms. Elizabeth Tapang-Tetteh, KroMA Director of Agriculture, encouraged Ghanaians to engage in and support farming activities to bolster food security and economic growth, highlighting the success of the government's flagship programmes in enhancing the agribusiness sector and encouraging youth participation in agriculture.
