Aflao: The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) announced that the ongoing operation to seal unauthorized border crossing points, known as 'Beats and Pillars,' is intended to ensure border safety and not to impede the voting rights of residents living near the border. According to Ghana News Agency, the Aflao Sector Command of the GIS, supported by sister security agencies, initiated 'Operation Close the Beats and Pillars' on Sunday, November 09, to prevent travelers from using unapproved crossing points. Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI), Noah Ahomka Yeboah, acting Volta Regional Commander of the GIS, assured the public that the primary objective of this security initiative is to keep unwanted travelers away from the country's borders, especially as Ghana approaches its crucial elections in December. During a working visit to the Aflao Sector Command of the GIS, DCOI Yeboah commended the officers for their dedication to safeguarding the nation's eastern border and encouraged them to continue enhancing t he Service's image. He emphasized the importance of securing borders against potential threats, particularly from violent extremists and terrorists, as the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections approach. He clarified that the operation is not aimed at restricting voting rights but at maintaining the integrity of the nation's borders. The acting Regional Commander toured some Beats and Pillars and encouraged Border Security personnel on duty to remain alert and collaborate to protect Ghana's territorial integrity. He also engaged with youth in border communities, urging them to remain calm and work with security agencies to maintain peace during the election period by providing information to intercept criminal elements. Additionally, DCOI Yeboah met with other security officers, including Assistant Commissioner Joseph Allan, the Aflao Customs Sector Commander, encouraging collaboration over rivalry for Ghana's interest. He reminded them that they are all working for the country, not just a single se curity service. Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Frederick Baah Duodu, GIS Aflao Sector Commander, reported that the security situation along the borders remains calm and peaceful during the ongoing operation. Mr. Amos Asante, Officer-in-Charge of the National Intelligence Bureau at the Aflao Border, praised ACI Duodu for his proactive leadership in maintaining peace and security. Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Justice Kudzo Normeshie, Officer in charge of Public Affairs Unit, GIS Aflao, in an interview with Ghana News Agency, clarified that rumors of border closures are false. The operation ensures that goods in tricycles and on motorbikes pass through the main border for inspection, while people use either Beat 9 or the main border, avoiding unauthorized crossing points.
