Accra: The Rebecca Foundation, in collaboration with the Merck Foundation, has presented educational supplies and personal items to 30 academically gifted but financially disadvantaged girls in the Greater Accra Region. These beneficiaries, selected from various public Junior High Schools, received items aimed at supporting their education and encouraging them to remain in school. According to Ghana News Agency, the presentation ceremony was held in Accra, where each girl was given a school bag containing supplementary textbooks, personal hygiene products, sanitary pads, stationery, sneakers, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The items were handed over by Madam Sheela Oppong Sakyi, a lawyer and Strategist at the Office of the First Lady, alongside Madam Justina Djaba, Acting Director of Administration at the Ghana Education Service, on behalf of Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady. Madam Sakyi highlighted that the donation is part of the Rebecca Foundation's 'Because I Want to Be' program, a mentorship initiative launched in 2018 to empower young girls and women through education and skill development. The Merck Foundation partnered in this initiative through its 'Educating Linda' program, launched in 2019 to support underprivileged yet brilliant young girls in continuing their education. She expressed hope that this gesture would help the girls realize their dreams and ease the financial burden on their parents or guardians, ensuring their continued education. Madam Sakyi reiterated that the donation aligns with the Rebecca Foundation's mission to support government efforts in improving the lives of Ghanaians, particularly women and girls. She emphasized the importance of education in empowering girls to become responsible adults who contribute to national development. She urged parents to support their children, especially girls, to help them realize their full potential. Ms. Djaba praised both organizations for their donations, noting that they would significantly motivate the students in their educati onal pursuits. She acknowledged the challenges adolescents face and the importance of support systems in helping them achieve their dreams. Ms. Djaba encouraged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies and urged parents and teachers to provide guidance and support to the girls. The recipients expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the support, pledging to work hard to make their families and the nation proud. The girls were selected from schools including Osu Manhean Basic School, Dome Anglican Basic School, Kaneshie Basic School, Atomic Hill Basic School, and Adanta, Achimota, and Teshie Basic schools.
