The Education Ministry will participate on May 15-26 in the Early Grade Mathematics Assessment (EGMA), Director of the International Centre for the Training of Trainers and Pedagogical Innovation Imen Boukhari said on Friday.

The assessment targets second graders, Boukhari told TAP. 1,500 pupils in 50 public and private schools in urban and rural areas are involved. Results will be announced next July.

The assessment will take place outside classes and will include questionnaires to be answered by teachers, school principals and students.

"The aim of this assessment is to improve teaching so as to build student capacities," the official said.

Tunisia participated in 2021 in the EGRA (Early Grade Reading Assessment). Third graders participated in Arabic language assessment, while fourth grade students had their French language capacities appraised, she added.

Learning poverty increased by a third in low- and middle-income countries, with an estimated 70% of 10-year-olds unable to understand a simple written text, a June 2022 World Bank report revealed.
