Tunisian Red Crescent forced to destroy unusable donations

Tunis: The Tunisian Red Crescent has been forced to destroy donations of worn-out, unusable equipment and expired food, representatives of the organisation said at a press conference in Tunis on Saturday. Representatives of the Red Crescent did not deny the content of videos showing members of the organisation destroying equipment and food and throwing them into the courtyard of the Red Crescent headquarters, saying the destruction operation was carried out in accordance with the legal procedures in force. They emphasised that the process of sorting donations was continuing and was being carried out in stages, noting that international standards do not allow donations to be sent if their expiry date is less than six months. Regarding the details of the Red Crescent's expenditures on behalf of the Palestinians, Red Crescent officials said that one million dinars had been allocated to accommodate the injured in tourist facilities in Tunisia and 11 million dinars to rent 65 apartments, in addition to providin g a monthly stipend of 400 dinars to 503 Palestinian students. The Tunisian Red Crescent has also contributed 250,000 dinars to feed the wounded Palestinians admitted to the field hospital set up in Tunisia.
